A strange little creature has found its way into the chicken coop…
Inspired by the wonderfully bizarre Cockatrice of medieval folklore, this A5 art print features my interpretation of the legendary creature: part rooster, part serpent and part dragon, standing suspiciously amongst the chickens.
According to medieval legend, the Cockatrice could be born from an egg laid by a rooster and incubated by a toad or serpent. It was said to possess a deadly gaze and poisonous breath, and stories of Cockatrices even became attached to places in Britain, including Wherwell in Hampshire and Saffron Walden in Essex.
The original artwork was created by hand using pen, ink and watercolour, combining delicate linework with the little black, white-eyed creatures that appear throughout my Curious Bunny folklore collection.
